# Best photo vault apps for iPhone (2026), compared fairly

> Apple's Hidden album, VaultCave, Vaultaire, Keepsafe and Private Photo Vault compared on encryption, accounts, backups, ads and recovery.

Published 2026-11-02 · https://vaultcave.app/compare/best-photo-vault-apps-iphone

**The best photo vault app for iPhone depends on what you need. The free Hidden album is enough to keep photos out of sight. For a separate encrypted vault with no account, look at VaultCave or Vaultaire. For Android and cross-platform sync, Keepsafe or Private Photo Vault. Check the privacy label and recovery method first.**

There's no single best photo vault app for iPhone. The right one depends on what you're protecting, from whom, and what you're willing to trade: an account for easy recovery, a free plan for ads, convenience for a key only you hold. This page compares five options people actually choose between: Apple's built-in Hidden album, VaultCave, Vaultaire, Keepsafe and Private Photo Vault.

Full disclosure: this page is written by VaultCave's developer. We've tried to be fair, and to say plainly where another option is the better pick. Facts about other apps come only from their App Store listings, websites and privacy policies, as of November 2026. Security claims are each company's own and haven't been independently verified. VaultCave is launching soon and isn't on the App Store yet, so it has no ratings.

## How we compared

We looked at six things that matter most for something as personal as a photo vault:

1. **Encryption stated.** Does the app say how files are encrypted, and how keys are made? "Locked" isn't the same as encrypted.
2. **Account required.** An account means your email, and possibly your files or keys, are tied to a company's service.
3. **Where backups live.** Your own iCloud, the vault company's servers, or nowhere. And whether the app says the backup is encrypted before it leaves the phone.
4. **App Store privacy label.** What the developer declares it collects. These labels are self-declared and "not verified by Apple", but they're a useful starting point.
5. **Ads.** Ads usually bring advertising partners and tracking along with them.
6. **Recovery.** What happens when you forget your code. Easy reset usually means someone else can get in; no reset means you must keep a phrase safe.

We didn't rank apps by number of features, and we didn't test their encryption ourselves.

## Apple's Hidden album: best free option for keeping photos out of sight

The Hidden album is built into the Photos app. Open a photo, tap **⋯**, then **Hide**, and it disappears from your library, Memories and widgets. Since iOS 16 the Hidden album (in **Albums → Utilities → Hidden**) is locked behind Face ID or your passcode, and on iOS 18 and later you can hide the album itself with **Settings → Apps → Photos → Show Hidden Album**.

**Best for:** keeping photos from popping up when you show someone your screen or hand over your phone. It costs nothing, needs no new app and works with iCloud Photos.

**Where it stops:** it opens with your phone's unlock, so anyone who knows your passcode can open it. Hidden photos stay part of your normal library and sync through iCloud Photos like everything else, and apps with full photo access can see them. It only handles photos and videos. For the full picture, see [Hidden album vs an encrypted vault](/blog/iphone-hidden-album-vs-encrypted-vault), and for step-by-step hiding, [how to hide photos on iPhone](/guides/hide-photos-iphone).

## VaultCave: best for no account, no data collection and hidden vaults

VaultCave stores photos, videos and any other file type encrypted on your iPhone or iPad, with AES-256-GCM. Each vault opens with its own pattern or passcode, and the unlock screen never lists vaults. Keys are derived from your pattern or passcode and bound to a device secret in the Secure Enclave, so copied files can't be attacked off the phone. There's no account, no ads, no analytics, and the privacy label is "Data Not Collected". Originals are kept at full quality by default.

Backup is optional, free and goes to your own iCloud, encrypted before upload, with padded sizes. Restoring always needs the vault's 12-word recovery phrase, which is generated for you and verified at setup. Wrong guesses are limited across all vaults, ending with the pattern disabled at the tenth attempt. Pro adds multiple hidden vaults, unlimited items, a duress decoy that silently erases the other vaults, erase after 10 failed attempts, encrypted sharing and disguised icons.

**Best for:** people who want a separate encrypted vault with no account and nothing collected, and who are comfortable keeping a recovery phrase safe.

**Limits:** not released yet and no reviews. iPhone and iPad only, no sync between devices. No Face ID or Touch ID, by design, because biometrics can't choose which hidden vault to open. The free tier has one vault (up to 100 items). If you lose both your pattern and your phrase, the vault is gone for good. Our [security page](/security) explains the design and its limits.

## Vaultaire: best for families and more free vaults

Vaultaire is the closest app to VaultCave in design. It unlocks with a pattern on a 5×5 grid, and its developer states it uses AES-256-GCM with a random key that your pattern unlocks, derived with PBKDF2-HMAC-SHA512 at 600,000 iterations. It "requires no account", shows no list of vaults, and backs up "padded AES-GCM-encrypted records" to your own private CloudKit database, on by default and free. Each vault gets a nine-word recovery phrase, or you can supply your own of at least six words. A different pattern opens a decoy vault, and Pro adds a duress pattern.

The free tier allows up to 3 vaults with 100 photos and 10 videos in total. As of November 2026 its US App Store Pro plans run from Pro Weekly at $1.99 to Pro Lifetime at $39.99, with Pro Family Annual at $49.99 and Pro Family Lifetime at $99.99. There are no ads. Its privacy policy says analytics and crash diagnostics are on by default and can be turned off in Settings.

**Best for:** families who want one plan, people who want several vaults for free, and anyone who wants multi-device sync (Pro) in an account-free, pattern-based vault available today.

**Things to know:** analytics are on until you turn them off, and Vaultaire's FAQ says crash reports can include file names. It doesn't publicly document how its attempt limit works. Face ID isn't described. For a detailed look, see [VaultCave vs Vaultaire](/compare/vaultcave-vs-vaultaire).

## Keepsafe: best for Android and cross-platform sync

Keepsafe runs on iPhone, iPad, Apple Vision and Android. Its listing mentions PIN protection and fingerprint Touch ID. Basic includes photo backup and syncs your photos and videos to all your Keepsafe installations on any platform; Premium adds a Private Cloud of up to 10,000 items, Album Lock with separate PINs, ad-free use and Space Saver, which compresses photos and keeps originals in the cloud. Backups are held on Keepsafe's own service, and Keepsafe doesn't say publicly whether they're end-to-end encrypted.

Keepsafe's privacy policy lists collecting your name, email address and account data. Basic is ad supported, and the privacy policy names Google Analytics. As of November 2026, its privacy label shows Data Used to Track You: Usage Data. It has a 4.7 rating from about 385,000 US ratings.

**Best for:** people on Android, or using both iPhone and Android, who want their vault synced everywhere, and people who'd rather have an account-based reset than keep a recovery phrase.

**Things to know:** the free plan has ads and tracking listed on its privacy label, and your backups live with Keepsafe rather than in your own iCloud. See [VaultCave vs Keepsafe](/compare/vaultcave-vs-keepsafe) for more.

## Private Photo Vault: best for break-in reports and older devices

Private Photo Vault (listed as "Private Photo Vault - Pic Safe") runs on iPhone and iPad from iOS 15, on Apple silicon Macs, Apple Vision and Android. It offers PIN lock, pattern lock and password-protected albums, a "Decoy Password", a "Break-in Report" with photo and GPS, Face Down Lock and a private web browser. Its developer says photos and videos are AES-encrypted on the device, without giving a key size for local files.

It works offline with no account. Backup is the Premium "Cloud Vault", which needs an account and stores your backup on the vendor's servers; the vendor says it adds AES-256 encryption on your device before upload and that its team can't decrypt your backups. A forgotten app password can be reset through a recovery email set at first use, but a forgotten Cloud Vault password can't be recovered.

As of November 2026, its listing notes advertising, and its privacy label shows Data Used to Track You: Usage Data, with Photos or Videos among the data linked to you for app functionality. It has a 4.8 rating from about a million US ratings.

**Best for:** people who want break-in reports with a photo and location, an app that supports iOS 15, or a vault on both iPhone and Android with email-based password recovery.

**Things to know:** ads and tracking are listed, and backup needs Premium and an account.

## How to choose

- **You just want photos out of sight:** the Hidden album. It's free and already on your phone.
- **You want a separate encrypted vault, no account and nothing collected:** VaultCave (launching soon) or Vaultaire with its analytics turned off.
- **You want a family plan or several free vaults:** Vaultaire.
- **You need Android or cross-platform sync:** Keepsafe or Private Photo Vault.
- **You're afraid of losing a recovery phrase:** an app with email-based reset, such as Private Photo Vault, weighing that convenience against a reset path that doesn't depend only on you.

Whatever you pick, check how it encrypts, where its backups go and how recovery works before moving anything important in. If you choose an app with a recovery phrase, our guide on [storing a recovery phrase](/blog/recovery-phrase-how-to-store-it) is worth a few minutes.

## The short version

- The Hidden album is the best free choice for hiding photos, but it isn't a separate encrypted vault.
- VaultCave is best for no account, no data collection and hidden vaults; it's iPhone and iPad only, has no Face ID by design, and isn't released yet.
- Vaultaire is best for families and more free vaults, with analytics on by default.
- Keepsafe and Private Photo Vault are best if you need Android or email-based recovery, with ads on their free versions.
- Before choosing, compare encryption, accounts, backups, privacy labels, ads and recovery.

## FAQ

### Is the iPhone Hidden album a real photo vault?

Not quite. Since iOS 16 the Hidden album is locked behind Face ID or your passcode, which keeps photos out of sight. But it opens with the same unlock as your phone and stays part of your normal photo library, so it isn't a separate encrypted space with its own key.

### Which photo vault apps don't need an account?

As of November 2026, Vaultaire says it requires no account, and VaultCave has none. Private Photo Vault says no account is needed to use it offline, but an account is required for its backup and sync. Keepsafe's privacy policy describes collecting your name and email address for an account.

### Which photo vault apps have no ads?

VaultCave and Vaultaire show no ads. Keepsafe's free Basic plan is ad supported and Premium is ad-free. Private Photo Vault's listing notes advertising, and its FAQ covers Pro buyers who still see ads. Check the App Store privacy label of any app before installing.

### What happens if I forget my photo vault password?

It depends on the app. Private Photo Vault can reset an app password through a recovery email set at first use. Vaultaire and VaultCave use recovery phrases instead, and with neither the pattern nor the phrase there's no way back. Find out how recovery works before you move anything important in.

### Which photo vault works on both iPhone and Android?

As of November 2026, Keepsafe and Private Photo Vault both have Android versions. Vaultaire lists only iPhone and iPad. VaultCave is iPhone and iPad only for now, with Android planned but not yet available.
